Liver Function and Common Problems
The liver is your largest internal organ and works non-stop to keep you healthy. It processes everything you eat, stores vitamins, removes toxins, and even helps your blood clot properly. When your liver can't do its job, serious health issues follow.
Liver failure comes in two forms. Acute liver failure happens suddenly—often from drug overdoses or viral infections—while chronic liver failure develops slowly over time, usually from conditions like alcoholism or hepatitis. Watch for warning signs like jaundice yellowingskin/eyes, abdominal swelling, extreme fatigue, nausea, and confusion.
Beyond complete failure, your liver can face other challenges. These include viral hepatitis (types A, B, and C), alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease not caused by alcohol (NAFLD), and cirrhosis (permanent scarring). Each condition has similar symptoms but different causes and treatments.
Health Alert: Most liver damage develops silently over years with few obvious symptoms until the condition becomes serious. Regular check-ups are essential for early detection!
