Number Classification & Data Representation

Ever wonder what makes a number "natural" or "irrational"? Natural numbers are counting numbers (1, 2, 3...) and don't include zero, while whole numbers do include zero. Remember that irrational simply means the opposite of rational—these numbers can't be written as simple fractions.

All the numbers you'll typically work with in Algebra 1 are real numbers, except for imaginary numbers which belong to a different category. One interesting fact: irrational numbers don't appear on the diagonal line across a multiplication chart!

When it comes to displaying data, you have several options. Dot plots show individual data points and help identify the mode (most frequent value) and clusters (where data points group together). Histograms are bar graphs that show the frequency of data within equal intervals.

Quick Tip: When analyzing a histogram, remember you can see the distribution pattern, but you can't determine specific individual values like the highest grade in a dataset.
