Introduction to 3D Shapes
3D shapes, or geometric solids, have three dimensions that give them volume: length, width, and height. Unlike flat shapes on paper, these objects take up space in the real world!
Let's explore some common 3D shapes and their parts. A cube has 6 faces and 12 edges, looking like a fair dice. A rectangular prism (like a shoebox) also has 6 faces and 12 edges, but its sides aren't all squares.
A triangular prism has 5 faces and 9 edges - picture a Toblerone chocolate bar! A cylinder (like a soup can) has 3 faces (2 circular ends and 1 curved surface) and 2 edges where the curved part meets the circles.
Fun Fact: The shapes all around you follow these patterns - from cereal boxes to dice to cans of soda!

More 3D Shapes and How to Count
A cone (think ice cream cone) has 2 faces - a circular base and a curved surface - with just 1 edge where they meet. A sphere like a basketball has only 1 face and no edges or vertices!
Pyramids are special because their faces and edges depend on their base shape. A pyramid with a square base has 5 faces and 8 edges.
Counting faces is pretty simple - they're the flat or curved surfaces that make up the shape. For example, pick up a dice (cube) and count each flat side - you'll find 6 faces.
Counting edges means finding the lines where two faces meet. On that same cube, look for the straight lines where sides connect - you'll count 12 edges total.
Remember: Curved surfaces like those on cylinders and cones count as faces, but they work differently than flat faces!

Tips and Practice
When counting parts of 3D shapes, remember that curved surfaces (like on a can or ball) are still counted as faces, even though they're not flat. These special shapes need their own counting rules!
