Units and Measurements
A unit is simply a standard name we use to measure physical quantities, like the meter for length. Think of units as the language scientists use to communicate measurements precisely across the world.
Different prefixes help us deal with very large or very small measurements. For example, "kilo" means 1,000 times larger, so a kilometer is 1,000 meters. Meanwhile, "milli" means 1/1,000, making a millimeter just 1/1,000 of a meter. These prefixes range from tiny "femto" to massive "tera" .
Measurements come in two types: standard and non-standard. Standard measurements use agreed-upon units within measurement systems (like inches or pounds), while non-standard measurements use informal references (like "a pencil length" or "an arm's length"). Only quantities with matching units can be added or subtracted!
Pro Tip: Remember the seven SI base units as the foundation of all scientific measurements: kilogram (mass), meter (length), second (time), ampere (electric current), kelvin (temperature), mole (amount of substance), and candela (luminous intensity). Everything else in science builds from these!
