Fluid Mechanics: Classification and Properties
Fluid mechanics studies fluids at rest (statics) or in motion (dynamics), and how they interact with solids or other fluids. When we talk about fluids, we mean substances in either liquid or gas phase.
The main difference between solids and fluids is how they respond to forces. While solids can resist shear stress that tries to change their shape, fluids cannot maintain their shape when stressed and will continuously deform.
Fluid mechanics branches into several specialized areas. Hydrodynamics studies nearly incompressible fluids like water, while hydraulics focuses on liquid flows in pipes and channels. Aerodynamics examines gas flows around objects like aircraft, and gas dynamics deals with high-speed flows where density changes significantly.

Applications and Characteristics of Fluids
Fluid mechanics helps design everything from irrigation canals and pumping stations to aircraft, water supply systems, and sewage pipes. Understanding how fluids behave is essential to these engineering applications.
Liquids and gases have distinct characteristics. Liquids maintain their volume but take the shape of their container, while gases fill both the shape and volume of their container. Liquids resist sudden velocity changes due to their viscosity, while gases have very low resistance to movement.
Both liquids and gases cannot support shear forces and will continuously deform to minimize these forces. However, they differ in compressibility – gases can be easily compressed, while liquids resist compression. Their molecular structure also differs, with liquid molecules positioned closer together with stronger attraction forces.

Types of Fluids: Ideal vs. Real
In fluid mechanics, we classify fluids as either ideal or real to help us model and understand their behavior. These classifications are important frameworks for solving practical problems.
Ideal fluids are theoretical models that have zero viscosity (no resistance to flow), are incompressible, and move with uniform velocity distribution. They experience no friction between moving layers and have no turbulence or eddy currents. While these perfect fluids don't actually exist, they help simplify complex problems.
Real fluids are what we encounter in everyday life. They have viscosity, can be compressed (though liquids only slightly), and show non-uniform velocity distribution when flowing. Real fluids experience friction between moving layers and often exhibit turbulent flow with eddy currents.
⚡ Understanding the difference between ideal and real fluids helps engineers make practical decisions. For example, water in a pipe can sometimes be treated as an ideal fluid for simple calculations, but designing efficient plumbing requires accounting for its real fluid properties!
