Kohlberg's theory maps out how humans develop their sense of morality throughout life. Instead of being born with a fixed moral compass, we gradually build our understanding of right and wrong through experiences and cognitive development.
The theory is organized into three main levels: Pre-Conventional, Conventional, and Post-Conventional. Each level contains two stages, creating a six-stage progression of moral reasoning.
These stages help explain why people at different ages make different moral decisions when faced with the same situation.
Real-World Connection: Think about how your own sense of right and wrong has changed since you were younger. Have you noticed yourself moving through any of these stages?
The Pre-Conventional level represents the earliest moral reasoning typically found in young children. At this level, morality is externally controlled rather than internalized.
Children at this level don't yet understand societal conventions or moral principles. Instead, they make moral decisions based on direct consequences to themselves, like rewards or punishments.
This level includes two stages that focus on self-interest and concrete consequences rather than abstract principles or social expectations.
Key Insight: Everyone starts at this level! Even adults can revert to pre-conventional thinking in certain situations, especially when under extreme stress.
In the first stage, children have a simple view of morality: rules must be followed to avoid punishment. "Right" is whatever doesn't get you in trouble.
Children believe rules are fixed and absolute - they don't yet understand that rules can be questioned or changed. They see authority figures as all-powerful with the ability to "know" when rules are broken.
A child in this stage thinks that punishment itself is proof of wrongdoing. If someone is being punished, they must have done something bad - the punishment proves it!
Think About It: Remember when you were very young and thought adults had magical powers to know when you did something wrong? That's classic Stage One thinking!
In stage two, children begin to recognize that different people have different viewpoints. They realize that rules aren't just handed down by authority but can serve various purposes.
Children at this stage develop a basic understanding of fairness as equal exchange or "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." They follow rules when it's in their immediate interest to do so.
Reciprocity appears during this stage but is still very practical and self-serving. A child might share toys, but mainly to ensure others will share with them later.
Example: When a child says "I'll be your best friend if you give me some of your candy," they're operating in Stage Two - making exchanges based on self-interest.
The Conventional level represents a shift from self-interest to understanding social norms. People at this level identify with the rules and expectations of others, particularly those in authority positions.
Most adolescents and adults operate primarily at this level. Morality becomes about living up to social expectations and fulfilling roles within society.
At this level, maintaining the social order becomes important, and people care deeply about how their actions are perceived by others.
Real Talk: Most of your classmates (and many adults) are probably at this level right now. This is why peer pressure can be so powerful during the teenage years!
During stage three, children become highly aware of social roles and expectations. Being seen as "nice," "good," or "normal" becomes extremely important.
People at this stage make moral decisions based on how their choices affect relationships. They try to live up to what they believe others expect from them in various roles (good student, loyal friend, obedient child).
Approval from others becomes a powerful motivator. If others accept and approve of your behavior, you feel you're doing good, regardless of the actual consequences of your actions.
Think About It: Have you ever gone along with something you weren't comfortable with just to avoid disappointing someone or to maintain a friendship? That's Stage Three reasoning.
In stage four, moral thinking expands from personal relationships to society as a whole. People now consider how actions affect social order and maintain the system that keeps society functioning.
Rules, laws, and duties are viewed as important in their own right, not just to avoid punishment or gain approval. There's a strong belief that everyone must follow the rules for society to function properly.
When judging others' actions, people at this stage consider not just the impact on relationships but on the entire social system. "Law and order" thinking predominates.
Connection: When someone argues "rules are rules" or "that's just how things work" even when a rule seems unfair, they're likely using Stage Four moral reasoning.
The Post-Conventional level represents more mature moral reasoning that relatively few adults fully achieve. At this level, people step back from society's rules to consider abstract ethical principles.
People operating at this level understand that rules and laws serve human purposes. They question whether existing social arrangements actually serve these deeper principles of justice and human rights.
This level requires abstract thinking and the ability to see beyond immediate social conventions to universal ethical principles.
Challenge: This level is difficult to reach! Research suggests only a small percentage of adults consistently reason at the post-conventional level.
At stage five, people understand that different individuals and societies have different values and opinions. They see laws as social agreements rather than rigid rules – useful, but open to critique and change.
People recognize that while rules generally benefit the majority, they sometimes work against individuals or minority groups. When this happens, the rules may need to be questioned or changed.
This stage prioritizes basic rights and democratic processes over blind obedience to laws. Some principles (like human dignity and freedom) are seen as more important than any specific rule.
Real-World Example: Civil rights movements often operate from Stage Five reasoning, challenging unjust laws while appealing to higher principles like equality and justice.
In the final stage, people develop a personal commitment to universal ethical principles. These might include equality, justice, human dignity, or reciprocity.
Unlike earlier stages, moral decisions come from internalized principles rather than external authorities or social contracts. People follow their conscience even when it contradicts laws or social conventions.
A person in stage six is willing to defend their principles regardless of consequences to themselves. They might engage in civil disobedience or accept punishment for standing up for what they believe is right.
Think Deeper: People like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and other moral leaders who risked everything for their principles demonstrate Stage Six moral reasoning.
