Neurons and Brain Communication
Your brain contains billions of specialized cells called neurons that are the building blocks of your nervous system. When active, neurons generate electrical pulses and release chemical secretions to communicate with each other.
Neurons pass information at junctions called synapses - tiny gaps where the axon of one neuron connects with the dendrite of another. This process, called neurotransmission, is how your brain cells talk to each other through chemical and electrical signals.
Brain chemicals play crucial roles in neural communication. Hormones can excite neurons, inhibit them, or change their sensitivity to other signals. Neurotransmitters like acetylcholine help with attention, GABA provides pain relief, while others like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins regulate everything from mood to movement.

The cerebrum is responsible for conscious thought and voluntary actions and is divided into four lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal.
Quick Fact: Your brain's left and right hemispheres aren't strictly divided in function—they work together constantly. The idea that people are "left-brained" or "right-brained" is mostly a myth!

The cerebrum makes up about 85% of your brain's weight and is the thinking powerhouse. It controls voluntary muscles, processes sensory information, and stores both short-term and long-term memories that make you who you are.
The limbic system is your brain's emotional center. It includes the thalamus (processes most sensory information), hypothalamus (controls fight-or-flight responses and basic drives), amygdala (processes fear and emotion), and hippocampus (crucial for forming new memories and spatial navigation).
Your hindbrain contains the cerebellum or "little brain," which has its own hemispheres and folded surface. It coordinates movement, posture, and balance, allowing you to perform physical activities smoothly without conscious thought.
Mind-Blowing: When the brain suffers damage, some fascinating conditions can occur. In contralateral neglect, usually from damage to the right parietal lobe, patients completely ignore everything on their left side—even their own body parts! Similarly, phantom limb syndrome causes amputees to feel sensations in limbs that are no longer there.
