Spanish Verb Conjugations: Present, Preterite, and Imperfect

This page provides a comprehensive overview of conjugación de verbos en presente pretérito e imperfecto for regular Spanish verbs. It covers the three main verb types (-ar, -er, -ir) across three tenses: present, preterite, and imperfect.

The present tense is used for current actions and states. For -AR verbs, the endings are: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -an. For -ER/-IR verbs: -o, -es, -e, -emos/-imos, -en.

Example: For the verb "hablar" (to speak) in present tense: yo hablo, tú hablas, él/ella/usted habla, nosotros hablamos, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan

The pretérito perfecto simple, also known as the preterite, is used for completed past actions. For -AR verbs, the endings are: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -aron. For -ER/-IR verbs: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -ieron.

Example: For the verb "comer" (to eat) in preterite: yo comí, tú comiste, él/ella/usted comió, nosotros comimos, ellos/ellas/ustedes comieron

The pretérito imperfecto, or imperfect, is used for repeated or ongoing past actions. For -AR verbs, the endings are: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -aban. For -ER/-IR verbs: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían.

Example: For the verb "vivir" (to live) in imperfect: yo vivía, tú vivías, él/ella/usted vivía, nosotros vivíamos, ellos/ellas/ustedes vivían

Highlight: The chart does not include the "vosotros" form, which is commonly used in Spain but less so in Latin America.

Vocabulary: "Verbos regulares" (regular verbs) follow these standard conjugation patterns, while irregular verbs have unique conjugations not shown here.
