A period in which the politics were corrupt and stagnant and many of the elections had been centered around "meaningless hoopla" What did not happen during this time? During this time, there was no equal representation of voice in the government. They were mostly being controlled by the huge corporations that used the government in order to gain more profit. On the outside it may have seemed like they were growing and prospering, but in reality the rates of poverty were increasing. And we were slowly falling into moral decay. 2. Who is responsible for horizontal integration? It was pioneered by Rockefeller who took advantage of this strategy in order to keep expanding his own empire Know the industrial trusts that formed by these industrialists. The trusts were so powerful they (in a cartoon that was shown in class, they were like a part of the government pulling the strings behind the scenes) a. Know what industrialists were responsible for what industry development (ex. Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, JP Morgan, Stanford, Duke..) Who bought out Andrew Carnegie and formed a new corporation? It was Rockefeller who bought his company at a very high price and used it to his advantage to create more and more power for himself 3. Understand William Graham Sumner's philosophy... remember we talked about his related to Laissez faire and Social Darwinist theory. He had this idea that society worked in a way that only the fittest would be able to survive. (surival of the fittest) He referred to th epoor and weak people as "burdens" to society and that they were in a way a waste of space The idea of "laissez faire" is that the government had allowed for the companies to do their own work alone without becoming too involved in their own businesses As a result of this companies were able to do whatever they had pleased without having to be worried about an insightful eye watching them The advocates were able to bring back the reconstruction 4. Understand Andrew Carnegie's philosophy on Gospel of Wealth Andrew believed that, evne though industrialization did increase the gap between the rich and the poor it also improved the livs of many others He argued that now some of the poor were also able to enjoyed some of the things the rich people were unable to back in the day 5. How did immigration affect the growth of industry and urban areas (cities)? The population expanded more, there was more demand for living space, and more jobs had to be opened up More inventions were introduced and they would begin to expand out more Brought over their own religions and led to the rise of more catholic churches 7. Union supporters attacked the guards hired to close them out and protect strikebreakers who had been employed by the mill, but the National Guard soon suppressed this resistance and Homestead, like other steel plants, became a non-union mill. Understand William Jennings Bryan'; role with reform and the Populist Party He proudly defended the farmers and made many speeches Is part of the Democratic Party - The democrats who used to always defend the government was now leaning towards a more activist stance In his famous speech "cross of gold" Although William did secure the electoral votes Mckinely was still able to win The populist party were a group of people who were sick of seeing the fraud and corruption in the government they took it into their own hands to no longer be oppressed by power and worked their own way up from there (Democrats were against them and argued that they were the Radical republicans in disguise) Their leader was Tom Watson They fought with the Democrat party in order to win over the South Short Answer Section (Topic Clue) Industrialization Industiralization has over created a big impact on each of the states. I created more opportunities for the companies and opened up to new social classes. The industrialization brought more immigrants over to America looking for better jobs and opportunities. Also reintroduced ideas of expansion and trading overseas, they wanted to gain some cheap materials for trading and for their products to sell over with china The upbringing of new inventions such as the light bulb, telegraph and many other inventions that helped in everyday life They also were introduced to shuttle buses that helped travel around the city much quicker The different classes (middle and elite class) were able to also spend most of their free time at amusement parks, movie theaters, musical theaters which were open 24/7, and libraries
