The 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic: Causes and Effects

Spanish Flu: The Deadliest Pandemic
Ever wonder what a truly global health disaster looks like? The 1918 Spanish flu infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide—about one-third of the entire human population at that time. This deadly influenza virus killed between 20-50 million people globally, including 675,000 Americans.
The pandemic first appeared in Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia before quickly spreading throughout the world. What made this outbreak particularly devastating was the complete lack of effective treatments or vaccines against this lethal flu strain.
Communities took desperate measures to control the spread. People wore masks in public, while schools, theaters, and businesses were forced to close—measures that might sound familiar today. The death toll was so overwhelming that makeshift morgues were created to handle the number of bodies.
Did you know? Despite its name, the "Spanish" flu likely didn't originate in Spain. Spain was neutral during World War I and freely reported on the outbreak, while other countries suppressed news about it to maintain war morale.
