The Civil War: Causes and Conflict

Reconstruction: Progress and Challenges
After the war ended, America entered the Reconstruction era , a complex period focused on rebuilding the South and integrating formerly enslaved people into society. This time marked both significant progress and painful setbacks.
Despite its hopeful aims, Reconstruction faced serious obstacles. Southern states created Black Codes to restrict freedoms of African Americans. White supremacist groups emerged, using violence and intimidation to maintain racial hierarchy. Segregation became the new tool for enforcing inequality after slavery's end.
Yet even with these challenges, Reconstruction laid crucial groundwork for civil rights. New constitutional amendments granted citizenship and voting rights to African Americans. Black communities established schools, churches, and businesses despite overwhelming opposition.
Remember This: Reconstruction wasn't a complete success or failure—it was an unfinished chapter in America's ongoing struggle for equality. The progress made during this time created openings that future generations would use to continue pushing toward justice.
