Causes of World War I

World War I didn't just happen overnight. Several major forces worked together to create the perfect storm for global conflict. Understanding these causes helps us see how nations can slide into war even when nobody specifically wants it.

Militarism became a source of national pride following the Industrial Revolution. Countries believed strong militaries made great nations, leading to an arms race—especially between Britain and Germany. This military buildup increased patriotism but also created dangerous tensions.

Alliance systems divided Europe into two opposing camps: the Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary) and Triple Entente (England, France, Russia). These alliances, designed for protection, actually increased the risk that a small conflict could pull all major powers into war.

Imperialism fueled intense competition as European nations raced to claim colonies in Africa and Asia. This scramble for resources and territory heightened rivalries and built deep mistrust between powers who constantly competed on the global stage.
