The United Nations

Ever wondered who keeps countries from fighting each other? That's where the United Nations comes in. Formed in 1945 after World War II, the UN works to maintain international peace and security through diplomacy.

The UN has a specific structure to handle different global issues. The Security Council focuses on peace and security through resolutions, interventions, and sanctions. Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, helps settle disputes between nations with its 15 judges serving 9-year terms.

The UN's work extends beyond just stopping wars. They established the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, send peacekeepers to conflict zones, try individuals for crimes against humanity, and provide humanitarian aid to those in need.

Did you know? The UN's founding charter states its purpose is "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war" - a powerful mission that continues today.

UN Organizations and Global Poverty

The United Nations isn't just one organization - it's a network of specialized agencies tackling different global problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) monitors global health and responds during crises. UNICEF provides assistance to mothers and children living in poverty. The World Bank offers financial help to developing countries.

One of the UN's biggest missions has been fighting global poverty through the Millennium Development Goals. These eight goals include eradicating extreme poverty, combating diseases like HIV/AIDS, promoting gender equality, reducing child mortality, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

To achieve these goals, the UN works alongside nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Unlike government agencies, NGOs operate independently of any specific country. Organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross provide humanitarian aid during crises.

Important distinction: Government organizations like USAID are not NGOs because they're tied to specific countries. True NGOs work independently across borders.

Humanitarian Organizations

When disasters strike or human rights are violated, humanitarian organizations jump into action. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) provides assistance to victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters. They ensure access to clean water and work to uphold basic human rights.

Amnesty International takes a different approach by advocating for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They campaign against human trafficking, denial of human rights, arms dealing, and exploitation of refugees and migrants.

Want to make a difference yourself? You don't need to join the UN to help! Start by becoming informed about global issues. Then volunteer with local organizations, spread awareness about important causes, or donate money to humanitarian groups.

Take action today: Even small contributions make a difference in global humanitarian efforts. Consider researching one international organization that interests you and learning how you can support their work.

Understanding Terrorism

Terrorism affects communities worldwide and takes many forms. It involves violence, threats, or intimidation to achieve political objectives. Terrorists often target civilians and use tactics like guerrilla warfare and assassination when they lack the military strength to compete with larger nations.

Some terrorism is even supported by governments. State-sponsored terrorism occurs when nations provide financial assistance, arms, shelter, or promote terrorist organizations. Historical examples include the Holocaust (1937-1945), Chile under Pinochet (1973-1990), and the Rwandan genocide (1994).

Domestic terrorism targets a group's own country and people. Several factors contributed to its growth during the 20th century: the spread of nationalism, independence movements, communist ideologies, and Cold War tensions.

Modern technology has made terrorism more effective and dangerous. Improved communication systems have made it easier for terrorists to recruit new members, solicit funding, and coordinate attacks.

Critical thinking: How has the internet changed the way terrorist groups operate compared to pre-digital times?

UNIT 6: MODERN GLOBAL SOCIETY

Terrorism Around the World

Terrorism has affected countries across the globe in different ways. In Italy during the 1970s, the Red Brigades sought to create a revolutionary state and remove Italy from NATO through robberies, kidnappings, and assassinations.

Peru faced the Shining Path group, formed in 1980, which wanted to overthrow the government and replace it with communism. They financed operations through drug trafficking and engaged in violence until many leaders were captured.

Northern Ireland experienced "The Troubles" - conflict between Protestant unionists who wanted to remain part of Britain and Catholic nationalists who wanted to join the Republic of Ireland. Since 1998, violence has significantly declined.

Even the United States has experienced domestic terrorism, most notably the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people, including 19 children.

International terrorist groups operate beyond single countries. Al Qaeda, one of the most notorious groups, carried out numerous attacks since 1992, including the devastating September 11 attacks in 2001 and other bombings worldwide.

Historical perspective: Terrorism isn't new - groups have used violence for political purposes throughout history, but modern communication and weapons have changed how terrorist groups operate.

UNIT 6: MODERN GLOBAL SOCIETY

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS:

Counterterrorism Efforts

Terrorism doesn't just harm its direct victims - it affects entire societies. Attacks can damage trade and financial markets, hurt tourism industries, and create a sense of insecurity that leads to demands for increased security measures.

Fighting terrorism requires international cooperation. Counterterrorism strategies include economic sanctions, treaties, international agreements, and sometimes military strikes. Countries work together by seizing terrorist funds, arresting members, and preventing access to weapons.

The United States has established specific organizations to combat terrorism. The Bureau of Counterterrorism, established in 1972 after attacks at the Munich Olympics, focuses on international counterterrorism efforts. The Department of Homeland Security, created after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, works to keep Americans safe from terrorist threats at home.

Modern challenge: Counterterrorism efforts must balance security needs with protecting civil liberties and human rights - finding this balance continues to be difficult for democracies worldwide.

Ethnicity and National Identity

Why do some groups of people want their own country? It often comes down to ethnicity - a shared identity based on language, religion, culture, and history. When these identities become political, they can be sources of both pride and tension.

It's important to understand the difference between a nation and a state. A nation is a group sharing common cultural elements that establish a national identity. A state is an independent territory with an autonomous government. When these align, you have a nation-state. When they don't, you might have a stateless nation.

Ethnic nationalism can take two forms: ethnic separatism (when a minority wants to split away from a country) or ethnic unification (when ethnic minorities in several countries want to join together). The collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s shows what can happen when ethnic tensions explode - the country split into seven different nations as ethnic groups fought for independence.

Map insight: Looking at population distribution maps can help predict potential ethnic conflicts. Areas with mixed populations without clear majorities likeBosniaHerzegovinaintheformerYugoslavialike Bosnia-Herzegovina in the former Yugoslavia often face the greatest risk of ethnic tension.

UNIT 6: MODERN GLOBAL SOCIETY

Ethnic Conflicts Worldwide

Ethnic identity has sparked independence movements worldwide. In Canada, Quebec province - home to mostly French speakers - has sought independence over language issues. Though independence votes have failed, they've often been decided by narrow margins.

Tibet, conquered by China in the 1950s, continues to face restrictions while many Tibetans push for independence with growing international support. Cultural differences in language, ethnicity, and religion have fueled this ongoing struggle.

In Africa, South Sudan became independent from Sudan in 2011 after 50 years of political unrest and war. The two countries differ significantly in ethnicity, language, and religion, making separation the ultimate solution to their conflicts.

Chechnya, a mostly Muslim region in Orthodox Christian Russia, has fought for independence since the 1990s. Religious and cultural differences continue to fuel tensions.

In Northern Ireland, the goal of Irish unification has persisted since 1922. With its Catholic majority, many citizens wish to reunite with the Republic of Ireland despite being part of the United Kingdom.

Think about it: What makes some independence movements succeed while others fail? Consider factors like international support, geography, and economic resources.

UNIT 6: MODERN GLOBAL SOCIETY

Northern Ireland Conflict

The struggle in Northern Ireland represents one of Europe's longest-running ethnic conflicts. Since the independence of the Republic of Ireland in 1922, Irish nationalists have sought to reunify the island.

Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom despite having a majority Catholic population. This religious divide reflects deeper cultural and political differences. Many Catholic citizens wish to be reunited with the Republic of Ireland, while Protestant citizens generally prefer remaining part of the UK.

In the past, terrorist organizations used violence to advance their goals, leading to a period known as "The Troubles." This conflict resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries before peace negotiations began to take effect.

Historical context: The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 marked a turning point in Northern Ireland's history, establishing a power-sharing government and significantly reducing violence. This shows how even long-standing ethnic conflicts can find peaceful resolutions through negotiation.

Understanding Genocide

Genocide is one of the darkest aspects of human history. The term itself was created by Raphael Lemkin to describe the intentional destruction of a human group. According to the United Nations definition, genocide includes killing group members, causing serious harm, imposing impossible living conditions, preventing births, or forcibly transferring children.

Certain factors make genocide more likely to occur. These include unequal distribution of power and resources, political instability, leaders who inflame tensions between groups, and specific plans for violence.

When genocide occurs, the international community can respond in several ways. They might impose sanctions against the responsible country, issue UN resolutions condemning the acts, arrest and try perpetrators through the International Criminal Court, or send UN peacekeeping missions.

The Armenian Genocide of 1915 represents one of the first modern examples of genocide. The Ottoman Turks committed systematic massacres against Armenia's population through government-sponsored killings, death marches, and mass deportations.

Never forget: Learning about past genocides helps us recognize warning signs and prevent future atrocities. Understanding history is crucial for creating a more peaceful world.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

In school I was really bad at maths but thanks to the app, I am doing better now. I am so grateful that you made the app.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend

Best app if you're in Highschool or Junior high. I have been using this app for 2 school years and it's the best, it's good if you don't have anyone to help you with school work.😋🩷🎀
