Structure of Water and Hydrogen Bonding
Water molecules have an interesting shape that creates an uneven distribution of electrical charge. Oxygen atoms pull electrons more strongly than hydrogen atoms do, giving oxygen a partial negative charge and hydrogen atoms partial positive charges . This creates what scientists call a polar molecule.
This polarity allows water molecules to form special connections called hydrogen bonds. These occur when the positively charged hydrogen of one water molecule is attracted to the negatively charged oxygen of another water molecule.
