Brain Basics & Cerebrum

Ever wonder how your brain fits so much power into a relatively small space? The cerebral hemispheres make up a whopping 85% of your brain, with the brain stem and cerebellum comprising the rest. To maximize processing power, your brain has ridges called gyri and valleys called sulci that dramatically increase its surface area.

The brain contains both gray matter (40%) and white matter (60%). Gray matter consists of unmyelinated neurons where processing occurs, while white matter contains myelinated neurons that enable communication throughout the brain.

The cerebrum controls your most human abilities: thought, speech, language comprehension, feelings, voluntary actions, and memory storage. It's divided into left and right hemispheres connected by a bridge called the corpus callosum.

💡 The frontal lobe is your brain's "executive center," handling everything from planning and decision-making to speech production (in Broca's Area) and voluntary movement control.

Your temporal lobe processes smell and hearing, helps you recognize faces, and works with the parietal lobe to help you understand language.

Brain Lobes & Specialization

The parietal lobe is your sensory processing center. When you feel touch sensations or need to understand spoken language, your parietal lobe gets to work, often collaborating with the temporal lobe to process complex information.

Located at the back of your brain, the occipital lobe houses your visual cortex, which is essential for processing everything you see. Without it, you wouldn't be able to make sense of visual information from your eyes.

Your brain shows fascinating hemispheric specialization - the left hemisphere controls the right side of your body and excels at facts, figures, and logical reasoning. The right hemisphere controls your left side and tends to shine in creative tasks.

🧠 While we often hear about being "left-brained" or "right-brained," both hemispheres work together for most complex tasks, with each side contributing different strengths to your thinking.

The Cerebellum, Brain Stem & Limbic System

The cerebellum might only make up 10% of your brain's volume, but it contains 50% of your brain's neurons! This powerhouse coordinates all your muscle activities, balance, equilibrium, and posture - enabling you to move smoothly through the world.

The brain stem connects your brain to your spinal cord and contains three crucial regions. The midbrain relays visual and auditory information, the pons passes messages between the cerebrum and cerebellum (and plays a key role in REM sleep), while the medulla oblongata controls vital functions like breathing rate and blood pressure.

Deep within your brain lies the limbic system, your emotional center. It includes structures like the amygdala (processing fear and anger), hippocampus forminglongtermmemoriesforming long-term memories, hypothalamus (regulating hunger, thirst, and temperature), and thalamus (the brain's "relay station" for sensory information).

⚠️ The hippocampus is one of the first regions affected by Alzheimer's disease, which explains why memory problems are often an early sign of this condition.

Brain Protection

Your brain is incredibly valuable, so your body protects it with multiple layers of defense. The meninges are three protective connective tissue coverings surrounding both the brain and spinal cord: the tough dura mater (outermost), the web-like arachnoid, and the pia mater (connected directly to the brain).

Between these protective layers flows cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which provides crucial shock absorption, support, and nourishment to your brain. The CSF is produced by specialized structures called choroid plexuses.

This elaborate protection system helps shield your brain from impacts and infections while allowing it to function optimally. Without these protective mechanisms, even minor bumps could cause serious damage to the delicate neural tissue.

🔍 Think of your brain's protection system like a high-tech phone case: the meninges are the hard outer shell and cushioned interior, while the CSF works like shock-absorbing gel to prevent damage during impacts.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it.
