Skeletal System Basics
Your skeleton starts with about 300 bones when you're a baby but consolidates to 206 bones by adulthood. Interestingly, half of these bones are found in your hands and feet! Size varies dramatically in your body—from the tiny bones in your inner ear to the femur (thighbone), which is your longest bone.
The skeletal system does way more than just hold you up. It produces blood cells through hematopoiesis in the red bone marrow and stores essential minerals like calcium in the bone matrix. Without your skeleton, movement would be impossible—bones act as levers that convert muscle contractions into movement.
Your bones also provide crucial structure, support, and protection. They form a rigid framework that supports soft tissues, protects vital organs, and maintains your body's shape. Think of your skeleton as both your armor and your scaffolding!
Fun Fact: Your bones are actually living tissues! They constantly rebuild themselves throughout your life, completely replacing their cells approximately every 10 years.
The skeletal system includes other important components: cartilage provides flexible, rubber-like padding at the ends of long bones to help with smooth movement, while ligaments attach bones to other bones, providing support for your freely moveable joints.

Bone Types and Structure
Bones aren't just hard, lifeless objects—they're complex connective tissues where living cells and other components exist within a hardened intercellular matrix. This unique structure allows bones to be both incredibly strong yet somewhat flexible.
Your skeleton is organized into four distinct bone types based on their shape. Long bones (like your femur) are longer than they are wide, short bones (like wrist bones) have cube-like shapes, flat bones (like your skull) are thin and often curved, and irregular bones (like vertebrae) have complicated shapes that don't fit other categories.
The entire skeletal system is divided into two main sections. The axial skeleton forms the central axis of your body, including your skull, vertebral column, sternum, and rib cage. The appendicular skeleton includes all your appendages—your upper and lower extremities, as well as your pelvis and shoulders.
Remember This: When studying bone structures, think about their functions—their shapes directly relate to what they do in the body. For example, flat bones protect vital organs, while long bones provide leverage for movement.
