Earth's Timeline and Early Life
Earth's 4.6 billion-year history is organized into different time periods based on rock layers and fossil evidence. The Precambrian makes up a whopping 80% of Earth's history and contains three major eons: Hadean, Archean, and Proterozoic.
The Hadean eon (meaning "hell-like") was Earth's fiery beginning with planetary formation, massive volcanoes, and a dim sun. No fossils exist from this tumultuous time when Earth's surface was mostly molten. During the Archean eon, Earth's surface finally cooled enough to form solid rock and the first oceans appeared. The oldest rocks we've found date to this period, along with potentially the first simple bacteria about 3 billion years ago.
The Proterozoic eon brought major changes to our planet. Bacteria began producing oxygen, transforming the atmosphere. The first eukaryotic cells (complex cells with nuclei) appeared, along with algae and simple invertebrates. During this time, Earth experienced extreme ice ages sometimes called "Snowball Earth."
Fun Fact: The oxygen that allows us to breathe today was actually "pollution" created by ancient bacteria! This oxygen was toxic to many early life forms but eventually enabled the evolution of more complex organisms.

The Rise of Complex Life
The Paleozoic Era began with the famous "Cambrian Explosion" - a rapid increase in the diversity and complexity of fossils. Life flourished in the oceans first, with water plants and fish evolving around 530 million years ago. Later, life made the dramatic move to land - first plants and fungus (430 MYA), then amphibians (370 MYA), and finally reptiles (340 MYA). This era ended with a devastating mass extinction wiping out 95% of aquatic invertebrates.
The Mesozoic Era is often called the "Age of Reptiles" and includes the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. During this time, the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, dinosaurs dominated the landscape, and the first birds evolved from reptiles. This era ended dramatically when a massive asteroid hit Earth, triggering climate changes that led to the extinction of many species, including the dinosaurs.
The Cenozoic Era represents less than 2% of Earth's history but brought major changes. Mammals became the dominant land animals, and flowering plants spread widely across Earth. Humans appeared relatively recently, just 500,000 years ago. The Pleistocene period featured significant ice ages that caused many organisms to go extinct.
