Rutherford's Atomic Model
Ernest Rutherford, a brilliant New Zealand-born British physicist, took J.J. Thomson's atomic theory to the next level. While Thomson had identified positive and negative charges in atoms, Rutherford made the revolutionary discovery that atoms have a positively charged core called the nucleus with negative electrons orbiting around it in specific paths.
His famous gold foil experiment, conducted with colleagues Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, produced unexpected results that changed science forever. They fired alpha particles at extremely thin gold foil, expecting all particles to pass straight through. Surprisingly, some particles bounced back at sharp angles! Rutherford later remarked this was like firing a 15-inch shell at tissue paper and having it bounce back at you.
Rutherford's nuclear model (1911) established that atoms have a positively charged center (nucleus) containing most of the atom's mass. The planetary electrons revolve around this nucleus at high speeds in fixed orbits. Most importantly, he determined that atoms are mostly empty space with a concentrated central mass.
Try This! Imagine a marble in the center of a football field - that's roughly the scale difference between a nucleus and its electrons. The nucleus is incredibly small compared to the total volume of the atom!
