Angle Sum of Polygons
Ever wondered how to find the sum of all angles in a shape with many sides? The secret lies in breaking down polygons into triangles. When you take any polygon with four or more sides and draw all possible diagonals from one vertex, you divide it into non-overlapping triangles.
For example, a seven-sided polygon (heptagon) can be divided into exactly 5 triangles, as shown in Figure 1. This isn't just coincidence—the number of triangles is always two less than the number of sides. This relationship gives us a powerful formula: S = × 180°, where n is the number of sides and S is the interior angle sum.
Using our heptagon example with 7 sides: S = (7-2) × 180° = 5 × 180° = 900°. This means all interior angles in a heptagon add up to 900 degrees!
Helpful Tip: When calculating angle sums, remember that every polygon can be broken down into triangles. Since each triangle has 180°, finding the number of triangles is your key to success!
The exterior angles of a polygon are another important concept. These are formed by extending one side of the polygon at each vertex. According to Theorem 40, in any convex polygon, the sum of all exterior angles (one at each vertex) always equals exactly 360°—no matter how many sides the polygon has!
